 Jallianwala Bagh Massacre: a brutal massacre

Jallianwala Bagh incident was an outcome of Rowlatt act(black act). India witnessed brutal massacre of people unarmed, gathered and started protesting against Rowlatt act in a calm and non-violent manner. The massacre was carried on by the orders of General Reginald Dyer. 

A short distance away from the Golden Temple complex is a spacious park, Jallianwala Bagh.

  • As per British government estimates about 379 people died and about 1200 were wounded. While INC estimates of death toll was around 1500.
  • 10 minutes of non-stop firing.
  • firing was stopped only after all the ammunitions were depleted.
  • around 1650 rounds of bullets were used.
  • surprisingly, soldiers who were firing were Indians. Indians firing Indians with an order of a single British general.
  • With his troops, Dyer entered the Bagh through a narrow alley, the only entry and exit path. The 1920 report noted that Dyer entered Jallianwala Bagh with 25 Gorkha soldiers and 25 Baluchis armed with rifles, 40 Gorkhas armed with only Khukris and two armoured cars.

  • He ensured that the exit was sealed before firing started.
  • More than 200 bodies were recovered from the well.



  • dyer was removed from duty post incident and post hunter commission's order.
  • dyer was shot dead by Indian revolutionary leader Sardar Udham Singh in London's Caxton hall on march 13 1940.
  • Dyer reportedly said on deathbed "so many people who knew about the incident said I did right....but so many others said I did wrong. I only want to die and know from my maker whether I did right or wrong".
Sardar Udham Singh:

  • He witnessed the massacre and was a friend of Bhagat Singh.
  • Joined the GHADAR PARTY  in 1924 to organise overseas Indians with the purpose of overthrowing colonial rule. 
  • Waited for almost 21 years to take vengeance over dyer. 
  • He was hanged to death for assassinating dyer. He called it a great honour.









Days before 100th anniversary of Jallianwala Bagh massacre, UK PM expresses regret over the incident, calls it a shameful scar on their history.
